Pinzon Portable Crib Sheets Review

Friday, October 30, 2009

When Princess A was ready to move up from a bassinet to a crib, we opted for a mini-crib instead of a standard crib since we were working with limited space.

Recently I was provided the opportunity to try the Pinzon Portable Crib Sheet and don't have a single negative thing to say.

These 200 thread count cotton sheets feel like much higher thread counts, but sport only a $9.99 price tag!

And unlike other portable crib sheets I've purchased, these stylish little sheets held their shape even after several washings.

Something that is difficult to find in similar priced items.

Choose from three cute gingham-patterned colors: light blue, light pink, and light green. Pinzon Fitted Portable Crib Sheets are available only at Amazon.com.

Do You Want To Know Your Future?

I'm guessing that many of the questions for today's Aloha Friday, graciously hosted by An Island Life, are going to be Halloween related.

Trying not to steer too far from such an appropriate theme, I'm going to play with a something different from the mysterious and (somewhat) dark side.

Fortune telling. Psychics. Predicting the future.

My Question:

Assuming that you wanted to, what is ONE thing you would like to know about your future?

My Answer:

I had to think long and hard about this answer. I think I would want to know my date of death. Not that I'm particularly morbid, but by knowing that date I could be guaranteed to have my affairs in order and to have said my good-byes.

Necco All Natural Wafers Review

Thursday, October 29, 2009

The New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) is the oldest multi-line Candy Company in the United States and celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 1997. The World Corporate Headquarters is located in Revere, Massachusetts.

I remember going trick or treating every Halloween as a child. One of the popular candies to hand out (way back then) was NECCO assorted wafers.

They were OH. SO. GOOD.

And I hate to admit it, but as I've grown older the candy faded from my mind.

Until Twittermoms, teaming up NECCO, jogged my memory with this review opportunity!

I received samples of the NECCO All Natural Wafers in the 7 original flavors: orange; lemon (yellow); clove (pink); cinnamon (white); wintergreen (purple); licorice (gray); and chocolate.

"Kids aren't going to go 'Yippee! It's all natural!' but they might say to their parents ... 'Look, it's all natural, it's right on the package!"' said Steve Almond, author of "Candyfreak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America," and a self-professed fan of NECCO wafers.

While lighter in color, these little wafers still pack an awesome, flavor-filled punch - immediately transporting me back in time.

I'm hooked....again!

And so are my 13 and 5-year-old sons.

NECCO will be phasing in these delicious treats at major retailers before and after Halloween.

However, in the meantime, NECCO was kind enough to provide a WHOLE package for me to hand as Halloween treats....so visitors to my home will get them before they're even in stores here!

Now how's that for AWESOME! :)

Brandi Carlile Give Up The Ghost CD Review and Giveaway

Give Up The Ghost, Brandi Carlile’s third album, unveils her talents in their truest form. After 2 albums and non-stop touring, she has let her guard down and offers her most candid recording to date. If the phrase “give up the ghost” most often refers to death or dying, it can also be used to describe the passing of stages in life, of transformation.

“They say it takes you your whole life to write your first record, and in our case the first two records, and that you have to write your second record in just a matter of months. So we went into the songwriting process conscious of that, and really made an effort to just leave ourselves behind. We wrote about about life, the world, how we felt, how we will feel. In that sense, these songs are like time travelers in that they exist on a much more ethereal plane, and that’s what ‘give up the ghost’ means to us,” Carlile explains.

I'm not sure if this makes me super uncool or what, but I had never heard of Brandi Carlile before until being offered the chance to review her newest album by One 2 One Network.

I feel in love as much with the meanings of the songs as I did the folksy, heartwarming (albeit heartbreaking, at times) sounds.

And as a HUGE fan of Elton John, I especially loved Caroline - cheery and upbeat gets me every time!

Carlile is truly a talented artist. Her music not only seeks to uplift and inspire listeners.

You can purchase Give Up the Ghost at Amazon at other retailers nationwide.

Olay Professional Pro-X Wrinkle Smoothing Cream Review and Coupon

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

I grew up in a time where hours of tanning was the thing to do. Sunblock was years away from being hip.

I've been a smoker.

I spent years drinking anything but a few glasses of water here an there.

And now, at 36 years old, my skin is starting to show evidence of the lack of proper care.

Fortunately, the makers of Oil of Olay have created a complete line to help reverse those unwanted signs of aging - whether those signs have been accelerated or just a natural part of aging.

I was invited to try the Olay Pro-x Wrinkle Smoothing Cream.

After using this cream for only a week, I have noticed visibly smoother facial skin. And those "crow's feet" around my eyes, especially when I smile, aren't quite as prominent now.

I'm very impressed with the quick results; and, although I find it to be a bit on the pricey side, I plan to continue use of the Wrinkle Smoothing Cream and add a couple more products from Olay that I feel will be beneficial to my nightly cleansing routine.

Want to try it for yourself? Visit www.olayprofessional.com to request a coupon to save $10!

Human Body Detectives Workbook and Audio CD Review and Giveaway

The idea for the Human Body Detectives (HBD) audiobook and workbook series came about when I realized that if kids understand how the food they eat plays a direct role in how their bodies function, they will be more inclined to make healthy food choices.

As a naturopathic doctor and a mother, I continually search for books and resources that provide healthy eating tips and encourage parents to make healthy food choices for kids, and more importantly, encourage kids to make healthy food and lifestyle choices for themselves. I discovered there were very few books out there promoting kids’ health in a fun way, and none designed to teach kids about health by focusing on the specific body systems.

As a health care provider, I am a firm believer in the power of prevention, and the best key to prevention is education and information. If children learn how their bodies work, they are more apt to make healthy choices that will give them a head start on a long, healthy life!

- Dr. Heather Manley, creator of Human Body Detectives

After having gestational diabetes in my last pregnancy, I got a wake-up call about the foods we eat and how our body processes them.

Since then I've taken major steps in changing the my own diet as well as my family's; especially my children's.

When offered the opportunity to review Human Body Detectives, I went and studied their website and knew this was the perfect chance to use visual aids to my 5-year-old on his level what I had been saying.

As soon as the package arrived in the mail, he was eager to get to it!

Flipping through the workbook, he could choose from crossword puzzles, fill-in-the-blanks, word searches, mazes, drawing, coloring, and jokes; plus so many other activities.

Being only 5, it's not surprising that he jumped right on the coloring since it's something he can do without Mom's help.

So we popped in the audio CD that perfectly compliments this workbook and he got to work.

But-

It was hard for him to concentrate on the coloring because he kept getting tickled at the story being told.

Only those who have had experience with young children can appreciate this, but he was cracked up as the "detectives" explained that a gas from digest food was going to lead to a fart and then later to poop.

He thought it was so hilarious that he had to share it with his 13-year-old brother when he came home from school. And, as can be expected, his older brother cracked up too.

The plus side? Telling the story on his level taught him important things about his body and what it does with the food he ingests. (I'll spare you how I know it was successful, you'll just have to trust me.)

I think it was an awesome way for him to learn something without having to crack open a boring science book.

Learning wasn't his favorite part. Oh no, that would be the stickers in the middle of the workbook.

Especially the "Who cut the cheese?" sticker.

Who would have guessed? ;)

{GIVEAWAY CLOSED. Winner: idahomom. Thanks for playing!}

Taking Back Control

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

With that title, I bet you thought I was posting about my kids or my husband, right?

Wrong.

I can only wish.

But the one thing I can get control of is those little bushes in the front of my front porch.

They grew a lot this summer and were really getting out of hand. Yet according to the care instructions, you're not supposed to trim them until after the first frost.

I think I spent a lot of time wishing away summer because those crazy looking bushes were whacking me out!

Now they're under control.

And I'm wishing I could bring back summer. :(

Wii Active Not As Big A Hit with The Kids As Wii Fit

Monday, October 26, 2009

I recently celebrated my 36th birthday. Every time I was asked what I wanted for a birthday I would have rather forgotten, I adamantly declared, "Wii Active!"

And that's exactly what I got.

I love it!

Combining it with the Wii Fit, I'm getting a great body-trimming and complete cardio workout.

My two youngest boys, however, aren't as thrilled with it and would rather stick strictly with the Wii Fit.

One of the very first things we noticed is that the Wii Active is not designed for left-handed persons. Bigger Brother, being a southpaw (as we lovingly call him), struggled to play with his right hand.

Wii Sports came with the ability to choose a person's dominate hand. The games play through Wii Fit don't function based on sides. However, Wii Active frequently specifies a hand the remote must be in, and if the remote is not in that specific hand it results in the "trainer" tsk, tsk'ing a playing as the system can't "read" a player's movements.

Once Bigger Brother changed hands, the system picked up on it right away. He, however, decided that just wasn't comfortable and gave up completely.

My next and last complaint has to do with running/jogging.

When using this portion of the Wii Active, players are instructed to insert the Nunchuck into the leg strap while holding the remote in their right hand.

Yeah, tried that. I kept being told I was moving too slow, even when I ran as hard as I could.

I've figured out to go against the instructions and keep the nunchuck in my left hand and the remote in my right.

Big Brother, on the other hand, decided to go completely against it and go back to the running feature on Wii Fit. According to him, it's "better to look at."

I've got to admit, the "scenery" on Wii Fit is better than the track found Wii Active.

Irregardless of those kinks mentioned, Wii Active is definitely an improvement in graphics and music.

I'm anxious to see Nintendo's next fitness release for the Wii. I'm sure I'll be a fan - can't say the same for the kiddies.

Unlike a lot of others, we were successful with in finding a Tickle Me Elmo and, even today, all of us still get "tickled" out of Elmo's high pitched little voice as he rolls and laughs insanely.

Tip Me! What's The Best Tip You've Ever Received?

Short and sweet this week-

My Question:

What is the best tip you've ever received. About life, love, parenting, etc.?

My Answer:

I have received many wonderful tidbits of advice during my lifetime, but if I had to choose one it would be: Pick your battles.

While the advisor is usually referring to children, I've found it is something that applies to life in general.

And since learning to follow this advice, life is much more simpler and enjoyable.

Little Music Lovers for Young Children Review and [Giveaway CLOSED]

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Little Music Lovers Series Classical music is believed by some researchers to cause "The Mozart Effect," a phenomenon that can potentially aid in the development of math, reasoning, and memory skills, while also giving babies and toddlers a head start on learning language.

And what parent doesn't want to give their child a head start, right? Including me!

So I was more than pleased to be given the wonderful opportunity by Momfluence to sample the Little Music Lovers series.

The four CD series for children from Universal Music Classical provides parents with an opportunity to introduce their babies and toddlers to the world around them by incorporating beautiful, thought-provoking music from the famous Decca catalog.

The musical pieces found in
The Little Music Lovers collection were carefully selected for the their melodic content, as well as their impact in enhancing early childhood development. Children will learn from the series, while parents can enjoy many hours of beautiful music.

Beautiful music envelops readers through a wide assortment of tracks that compliment one another perfectly from beginning to end.

While my 9 month old daughter didn't seem to be affected by the lovely sounds filling our home, my preschooler (5) definitely paid attention and even said, "I like that."

Although I may not be their target market, I found myself working at a slower, steadier pace to match the easy flow of the music; leaving me feeling much calmer and relaxed as it came to an end.

Can I assure you that your child will be a little budding Einstein after listening to these CDs? No, I can't.

But what have you got lose? Nothing...except yourself...in the music. :)

Somebody Catch Me Up On Desperate Housewives

Desperate Housewives just isn't one of those shows you can miss a single episode of and know what's going on.

And I've missed several lately....and I need someone to catch me up.

Here's the questions I have:

  • What happened with Julie?

  • When and how did Mike and Susan get back together?

  • How did they reintroduce John Rollins?

  • When did Gabby go from the frump look back to the Glamour model?

  • Who is Ana and why is she living with Gabby and Carlos?

Ok, that's just a few questions for starters. If I think of more, I'll post them.

Experience of a Lifetime: Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show

Saturday, October 17, 2009

As just a small child, I remember taking a trip out west to visit several states.

While I can't really recall exactly where I was at the time, I do remember attending a rodeo.

It wasn't like anything you'll experience here in your eastern States. This show was truly a rodeo.

As an adult, I've wanted my children to share in those feelings of seeing those dedicated to the rodeo profession perform. While you have a great number of talented individuals in and around Tennessee (where we live), it's simply not of the magnitude offered in places where the cowboy dream is alive and well.

In researching locations for family vacations, I've come across information about the Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show.

Looking at the photos, I can tell this is a rodeo of high caliber; one that I most definitely someday want to attend.

If you're headed to the Houston area, or are lucky enough to live in or around it, don't miss the 2010 Houston Rodeo and Livestock show to be held March 2 - 21. This 2+ week event is sure to leave you with many of awesome memories for you and your whole family.
