What Are You Thankful For Today?

Thursday, November 26, 2009

I want to wish all of my American friends a very happy Thanksgiving Day. I hope it is one filled with joy and laughter and the love that encircles us when surrounded by friends and family.

Although Thanksgiving is symbolic of peace between the colonist and Native Americans, autumn celebrations were conducted long before as a ceremony of thankfulness for a successful bounty of crops.

Today I want to to give thanks to God for the many blessings in my life, which include:

  • Four beautiful, healthy children that have taught me life lessons I may have never learned without them and known a love like no other.

  • A husband who has been with me through the good times and bad, and taught me definition of true selflessness.

  • For my parents who gave me life and have always shown me unconditional love, even at my worst.

  • For my brother who has tolerated me for 33 years, and my sister-in-law who tolerates him.

  • A for the necessities in life: home, food, clothing, and job.

In this time of economic hardship that spreads around the globe, I feel as though I have been blessed with so much more than I deserve.

What are you thankful for today?

Give the Gift of Time This Holiday Season!

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

My oldest son is very picky about his clothes and accessories; so it's often difficult to shop for him when it comes to gift giving occasions.

I thing I do know he likes is Fossil Watches. A popular brand due to their flexibility in styles - from contemporary fashion to sporty - Fossil watches has something for everybody's taste.

Bluedial.com is a great places to find Fossil watches at awesome prices. For example, I stumbled on the Fossil Men's Stainless Steel Two Tone Dial that you see here to the right; marked down from its original retail of $200 to $123. A $77 dollar savings!

As an authorized dealer of many well-known brands, Bluedial.com offers a manufacturer's warranty (based upon availability) and a simple return policy that gives me the reassurance I need when purchasing a Fossil watch online.

And did I mention the free 2nd day shipping to U.S. customers? Everybody knows how much I love the word FREE! Shopping late? No problem! Expedited shipping is available for an additional fee.

Bluedial.com offers a huge selection of brand name and popular styles at incredible prices, including the seiko dive watch

Bluedial.com is THE place to shop this holiday season if you're giving the gift of time!

West African Lemon Chicken Soup Recipe from Author Kay Marshall Strom

Monday, November 23, 2009

In Senegal, West Africa, I sat beside the community well, because that’s where the village women gathered. Out of the dusty wasteland they came, from every direction, their babies tied to their backs and their water containers balanced on their heads. They were glad to rest beside the well, for they had to walk many miles to get there. The average woman in the world, we are told, walks seven miles a day in her quest for water. When you factor in those of us who only walk to the kitchen to turn on the faucet, you can see that some must trek much farther than seven miles!

At the well, the women have a chance to catch up with the goings-on in neighboring villages, to air their complaints with one another, and to share their own news. And so I sat by the well with Obei and Helene, two Christian women in a country 98 percent Muslim, and waited to meet the women as they came for water.

And come they did.

A young woman came, sobbing over her baby son who was burning with fever. We prayed together in Jesus’ name that her baby would be healed.

A girl came and whispered her wish to learn to read, but said she could not because the walk to the well and back took her all day. Obei offered to teach her a little every day when she came for water. She started with: “For God so loved the world….”

A woman came with terror in her eyes and confided that her daughter must surely be a witch. Helene prayed for the girl, but also for the mother. “Do not believe what others tell you,” she warned the distraught mother. “Believe in the power of God.”

And Songa came. Obei and Helene had prayed with her before in Jesus’ name, and Songa had seen a miracle as her seriously ill son was healed. Now she too, was a follower of Christ. “My husband ordered me to renounce Jesus,” Songa told us. “When I would not, he threw me out of the house, but he kept my children. Please, please… pray for my little ones. Pray that they too will know the God of mercy and love.”

This holiday season, I am thankful for the women at the well in Senegal—all three of them, for Songa has joined the other two. I’m thankful for the lives they are touching in the name of Jesus. Most of all, I am thankful for the Living Water that flows freely for every one of us.

Leslie Blodgett Perfume Diaries Bare Skin Review

Next to shoes and purses, perfume is one of my favorite things. There's nothing that makes me feel more feminine than the right scent.

For a while now I've used the Bare Minerals make-up, and was ecstatic when I learned that the creator had also developed her own perfume.

Even more excited when I was offered the chance to try it and review it!

I wasn't the least bit hesitant to jump right and...

OH. MY. GOODNESS!!

The wonderfully blended florals and sexy hint of musk is AWESOME!

I am so adding this perfume to my Christmas wish list (and I'm pretty sure hubby Brian will get it for me since he liked it so well!)

Try it for yourself! Bare Skin has been available at Sephora since October 2009. This high quality perfume sells for $55 for 1.7 oz bottle; $35 for the .7 oz compact; and $30 for the 4.2 oz body cream.

Recession, Fear, and Peer Pressure for Random Thoughts Tuesday

When you're living in a small town where the only place to shop is a Wal-mart, it's really difficult to tell there is a recession going on.

The other night I went by there to pick up a few items that I needed - things that to purchase anywhere else would require several stops - and I couldn't find a parking space even relatively close to front of the store.

Now, I'm not one of those people who has to park right up front. (Most of the time anyway.) But when it's late evening, I'm not too keen on parking farther out in lot either.

There are just too many nuts these days. And not to mention we're going into a high crime season.

Add that to the recession they keep telling us we're having.

But speaking of crime -

I read something interesting. Did you that (something like) 94% of crime victims experienced some type of intuition beforehand; such as unexplained fear or a sense of dread.

All animals act on the fight or flight feelings they experience, except humans. Too often we're afraid of what others will think if we react on those feelings.

So essentially, peer pressure leads us to be crime victims.

Notice how many things we can blame on peer pressure?

Ever wonder why so many people care what others think of them?
I do. Of course, some people would tell me I should probably actually spend some time worrying about what others think.

I might get around to it....someday.

Well, there's my random thoughts for Tuesday. So what's on your mind? Share 'em during Random Thoughts Tuesday hosted by The Unmom!

What's Your Thanksgiving Day Traditions?

TwitterMoms and Target want to know the three Thanksgiving traditions you are or plan to pass down to your children.

I never really thought much of our Thanksgiving traditions until entering this contest. I was actually surprised to find that I'm passing down traditions that I wasn't even aware of! :)

Tradition 1: Watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I've been doing this since I was a young girl -before the days of cable television in rural areas - and still enjoying it with my four children.

Tradition 2: Dine with extended family at my parents, with my new favorite tradition of FRIED turkey - it's awesome! While the turkey fries, the men do a little target shooting while the women chat.

Tradition 3: Putting up the Christmas tree - although with Princess A on the (destructive) move this year, we may wait until closer to Christmas this year. Any other time, though, I love putting it up on Thanksgiving day to kick off the month (or so) till Christmas.

Want a chance to win 1 of 15 Target $50 gift cards? Just share your 3 favorite traditions that you hope to pass down in your own blog post! Click here for the full set of rules!

Home Security That ANYONE Can Afford

Whether you're protecting your home from the uninvited sources or just wishing to keep an eye on the baby's Nanny while you're at work, there is now an affordable solution: the wireless camera.

Children are a precious commodity; as well as their security - which means doing all you can to ward off ill-intentioned intruders from your home. Providing peace and security for yourself and your loves ones is so very easy - no difficult manuals, hard-to-read instructions, or contractors required.

The cost effectiveness and a neat appearance tops the reason for the popularity of this innovative form of home security.

Being wireless provides flexibility in location and an ability to transport to any location needed.

Installation is as simple as 1-2-3. If you know how to plug into an outlet, then you're ready to take the next step in protecting your family.

That's right! Peace of mind is as simple as a do-it-yourself weekend project.

Get started on your home security project in time for the holidays for as little as $80!

And while you're at it, you may also want to check out a complimentary system that I'm looking at buying: the doorbell camera station.

Answering somewhat blindly has been something I've been very uncomfortable with for some time. It would be nice to see which utility worker, package delivery driver, or neighbor is at the door without having to converse through the door.

A concept that is going to be especially important in the rush of the holiday season.

There's something in the way of home security for every budget, every idea, every do-it-yourself (or not) skill level at Security-Cameras-CCTV.com.

From the simple accessory to portable video records, from the wireless camera to the full blown security system, you'll find exactly what you're looking for!

Health Care and Road Trips Straight to Hell

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Aaargh! I am going to go NUTS!

So, I've got this friend - let's call her Snow - headed out on a road trip to see her daughter graduate from boot camp.

It's 3 o'clock in the afternoon and she hasn't packed a SINGLE item. She's aiming for a departure time of ten o'clock tomorrow morning.

Although Snow has known this day was coming for about 2 1/2 months now, she just reserved her hotel room two days ago, renewed her driver's license today (expired a year ago), and got her first eye exam in almost 20 years despite being blinder than a bat!

We are so opposites.

My car would already be packed. I would be living at 8 o'clock a.m. sharp - since mileage allows for an approximate 6 hour drive; which would put our arrival time at right about hotel check-in time.

I'm a stickler for stuff like that.

She's not.

But she should be, because I'm right.

I've got more control over this health care issue than I do Snow!

Speaking of which-

How'd you like that little victory lap Nancy Pelosi did at the price of her party?

Those democrats have assured themselves a pink slip in 2010.

You might have (barely) passed in the House but it's DEAD ON ARRIVAL at the Senate.

Saying "dead on arrival," then leads to the thought of not having as much time for mom blog because - wow! - people love reading true crime.

My blog on the subject - True Crime Book Reviews - is a hit! And I got to admit, sometimes that stuff is just more interesting that all this mundane Mommy stuff.

Ya know what I mean?

Then again, what kind of horrible person am I? A CRIME has to be committed - usually a pretty horrendous - to make a book. So, essentially, someone's pain is my pleasure, right?

I am so going to hell.
