Important Newborn Questions & Answers

Monday, October 11, 2010

The authors of Heading Home with Your Newborn answer important questions from moms about infant and baby care

heading home pic.jpg
Pediatricians, moms and authors, Laura A. Jana, MD, FAAP and Jennifer Shu, MD, FAAP offer a wealth of "parent-tested, pediatrician-approved" advice in Heading Home With Your Newborn: From Birth to Reality, Second Edition (American Academy of Pediatrics, September 2010). Available on the American Academy of Pediatrics official Web site for parents, HealthyChildren.org. Also available in bookstores nationwide. Here they answer a few questions from fellow moms:

Question: People often worry about taking a newborn out and you do not want to go to crowded spaces indoors like malls or parties where there could be germs and things like that; but in terms of how they can regulate heat, can they can go out if they are bundled correctly, in the cold for a walk? During the winter season is it best not to have them out and about like that?

Dr Jana: We have an entire section of the book called "Thinking Outside the House". That is a good example of what people often forget in the Pediatrician books. Where you say; what about the practical? Can I step out of my house? Now all of a sudden my baby seems even smaller because we are going out in the real world. Especially in the very specific new born period - the first three weeks, think of the timeframe when babies really need to wear their hats because their heads lose heat. Here in Nebraska I would not recommend somebody taking a newborn out at the peak of winter. What you find is a lot of new parents do not want to step outside when it is 40 degrees out, because they are afraid it is cold, and there are lots of good accessories to keep drafts from getting in to the where the babies are in the car seats and infant carriers. Just try avoiding extremes temperatures.

Question: What is the most important thing you think parents should know and do before a baby is born?

Dr Shu: One important thing, just from a timing standpoint, you might need to look for childcare as soon as you conceive. Just the reality of a lot of childcare situations is that you have to get on some kind of waiting list to get in to the place of your choice. So I would consider that high on the list. You want to make sure that your financial affairs like insurance are in order. There are so many smart parents I know that just accidentally forget to add their child to their insurance, and they are stuck with a huge bill. That is something you want to put on your To Do list, as soon as that baby has a name and birth date.

Picking a Pediatrician before you deliver is also a really good idea, and that is something we recommend sometime in the early part of the 3rd trimester. The reason for that is you want to hit the ground running and get a head start, rather than play catch up when you have a baby and try to figure out somebody that you have a good fit with. Finally, the most important supplies you will need for having the baby include a car seat which you will need to have once leaving the hospital, something to clothe the baby in, diapers and feeding supplies.

Question: How can you prepare for the birth of a newborn if you wind up delivering early or have an unplanned c-Section?

Dr Jana: Some people have a sense they might deliver earlier, but for a large number of parents, it catches them completely off guard. People often ask as us, when is the best time to read the book? We wanted to make it so that you can start reading it 8 weeks in advance and then pick it up at two in the morning when you have a question with a one week old. The thing that catches people by surprise, most people do not plan on have a C section, most people do not plan on having a premature baby... getting those things that Doctor Shu mentioned really helps take away some of the stress of new parenthood because that unknown is not there anymore.

Hidden Valley Ranch Mock Mash Potatoes Recipe, Salad Style.

Saturday, May 8, 2010

I'm always looking for new recipes and new ways to add a little more healthy foods to our diet.

Disguised, of course.  You know how picky little kids can be!

So when Hidden Valley© and TwitterMoms encouraged Moms to "recreate" Hidden Valley's Mock Mash Potatoes recipe, I jumped on it!

My creation turned into the Hidden Valley© Ranch Mock Mash Potatoes Salad.  Doesn't it look yummy?

Wanna try it?  Here's the recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 head cauliflower, washed and broken into florets (about 4 cups)

  • 1/2 cup Hidden Valley The Original Ranch Dressing Light

  • 1 tablespoon fat-free milk

  • 1 tablespoon light margarine (tub style) or butter

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • Classic Iceberg Salad (pre-mixed)

  • Bacon pieces

  • Croutons

Directions:

  1. Steam cauliflower until tender.  (About 20 minutes)

  2. While steaming, place salad mix in to a bowl.

  3. Place cauliflower into blender.  Add dressing, milk, and margarine.  Blend until mixture reaches the consistency of mashed potatoes.

  4. Scoop mixture into center of sald mix.  Sprinkle with bacon pieces and croutons.

  5. Add salt and serve.

I served it as a side dish to chicken strips and it was a HIT with my family!   Especially the 5-year-old who is the SUPER PICKY eater of our family.
It's tasty.  It's healthy.  And it's a fun "disguised" food.  So we'll definitely be having again!

If you decide to try it, be sure to let me know how it turns out!

10 Little Things that Lead to a Happier, Healthier You

Thursday, April 29, 2010

When trying to improve your personal health and happiness, sometimes big steps, like starting a new diet or exercise plan, can feel overwhelming and daunting. This spring season, we’re celebrating the little things we can do that add up to make a huge difference in bettering ourselves and our health, wellness and happiness!

TwitterMoms and Tropicana Trop50 have teamed up to bring you a "Spring Renewal" blogging program, asking for the "10 Little Things that Lead to a Happier, Healthier You."

This is a topic that I could spend forever on because it's something toward which I've spent working the last couple of years.

These are the 10 things I do for a healthier, happier ME:

  1. Choose Food Wisely:  Sometimes we don't even realize it until we change it, but diet plays a big part in our happiness as well as our health.
  2. Sleep:  This can be a tough one, especially for Moms, but getting a minimum of 8 hours of sleep each night allows the body to "reset."  And resetting is something we all NEED!
  3. Nix Negativity:  Other people and situations can bring you down too.  I found that by eliminating negative people and situations that were causing me stress (where possible) did a lot for improving my mood.  And since we know that stress often presents itself with physical symptoms, 86'ing the negativity factors can also improve overall health.
  4. Sunshine:  Whether it's spending time in direct sunlight or throwing open the curtains to let it in, sunshine is an AWESOME happy stimulator.
  5. Exercise:  I personally prefer Zumba and Wii Fit for exercising, but no matter how you choose, exercise not only burns calories but produces endorphins that are proven to improve our moods.
  6. Get Your Groove On:  Okay, so maybe it goes hand in hand with exercising, but have you ever just listened to a song and began feeling more upbeat?  When I'm feeling a little down, I'm prone to put on Kenny Chesney Live and let go!
  7. Talk it Out:  The more reserved probably won't find this helpful, but I've personally found just spending fifteen minutes "letting it all hang out" goes a long way for destressing.  I talk to my husband, my best friend, or - yes, I admit it - I even talk to myself.  :)
  8. Cleanliness is Next to Godliness:  Clutter and dirt can affect mood as well as health.  While I'm not a cleaning fanatic like my mother - gotta love her, after 20 years her house looks like it's never been lived in...lol - I do try to get clutter to a minimum, dust, sweep, vacuum, mop, and keep the bathrooms clean.  And I feel so much better when those things are done.
  9. Have a Little Faith:  Knowing we're not alone in times of struggle, feeling as though there is something greater than us, has been shown to promote both healthiness and happiness.
  10. All Work and No Play Makes You a Very Dull Person, Indeed:  As Moms, are lives are constant go-go-go, centered around the children.  And that's great, but sometimes we all need a little "Me Time."  I find a little time each day to read, watch a sitcom, or just do nothing.  Just a few minutes in a day to do something I want to do can give me that second wind needed to get through the rest of the day.  Try it!
That's my tips for creating a healthier, happier me.  What's yours?

I wrote this blog post while participating in the TwitterMoms and Tropicana Trop50 blogging program to be eligible to win 6 free Juicy Rewards points and a $30 gift card. For more information on how you can participate, click here.

Cottonelle Wants to Know: Over or Under? (Comment to Win!)

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Now here's a contest I can really get into!

Cottonelle has teamed up with Mom Bloggers Club on the great toilet paper debate: over or under?

It's funny they should ask this... I'm constantly nagged by my family (who seem to inexplicably leave it to me to replace toilet paper rolls) because I don't have a preference.

I just slap it on and go!

They (all men, mind you) insist on.....[insert drumroll].....OVER.

According to them, under is "just wrong."

So, in exchange for a month's supply of free toilet paper and being a member of Mom Bloggers Club, I'll go with majority rules: TEAM OVER!

What about you? Join in the fun at http://www.cottonellerollpoll.com!

Kimmie

You can win too! Just leave a comment stating whether your a member of TEAM OVER or TEAM UNDER and will be entered to win 1 of 10 Cottonelle gift baskets randomly chosen on January 29, 2010 from all entries.
