Fun Facts About Mother's Day

The Egyptians were the first known people to celebrate Mothers by hosting an annual festival in honor of the goddess Isis, who was regarded as the Mother of the pharaohs.

Later, a 1600s clerical decree in England broadened the celebration to include real mothers and was referred to as Mothering Day.

When the first English settlers came to America, they discontinued the tradition of Mother's Day. However, President Woodrow Wilson, at the urging of Anna M. Jarvis, declared the second Sunday in May to a national day of observance for Mothers.

Today, many countries around the world celebrate Mothers on the second Sunday in May. Here is more fun trivia about Mother's and their special day:

• Jarvis filed a lawsuit to prevent the commercialization of Mother's Day. She failed.
  
  
• The most popular month for births is August.
  
  
• Although a baby is born with very poor eyesight, s/he can recognize his/her mother almost immediately.
  
  
• 81% of women 40 to 44 years old are mothers. In 1980, 90 percent of women in that age group were mothers.
  
  
• The most popular day for becoming a mother is Wednesday.
  
  
• Perfume is one of the most popular gifts given on Mother’s Day in the U.S.
  
  
• Mother's Day is the busiest phone day of the year. An estimated 122.5 billion calls are made to Moms worldwide on the second Sunday of May each year.
  
  
• According to a census, there were 82.8 million mothers in the United States in 2004.
  
  
• As of 2005, the average age of the first time mother was 25.
  
  
• The year 2006 was the first year that the birth rate was high enough for the adult population to replace itself since 1971.
